The science behind the everheal Life Starter Program
When searching for information about what the "best diet" would be, we came across a number of different recommendations from a variety of sources. Many people indicated that the paleolithic diet was the best diet to adhere to, but other views were in direct contrast.
So which one is right?
We decided to analyse 15 different dietary recommendations compared to the paleolithic diet to see if we could find the common links for what constitutes a healthy, anti-inflammatory diet...
Our analysis indicated that ~70% of overall recommendations were the same (shown by all the green boxes in the table above). When it came to "foods to eat", vegetables were unanimous across all recommendations, including the Australian Government Department of Health and the
Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) diet!
Of course there were "grey-area foods" (such as nuts/seeds, eggs, coffee, legumes and gluten-free grains) which had some variation, however it's no surprise that refined sugars and processed foods were key standouts for "foods to avoid"!
When we dug a little deeper, we discovered that many of the dietary recommendations are designed to reduce inflammation and heal "leaky gut".
What is "leaky gut"?
Leaky gut (or intestinal permeability) is where small holes appear in the lining of the gut, due predominantly to the inflammatory food we consume within our modern Western diet. When these holes appear, undigested food particles and toxins can leak into our bloodstream causing our immune system to constantly fire (trying to protect us). This causes systemic inflammation and is the leading cause of autoimmune and other chronic health conditions.
Therefore, the goal of an autoimmune-friendly diet is to reduce inflammation and leaky gut!
The Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) diet is considered to be the "gold standard" when it comes to dietary recommendations for autoimmune sufferers. Although the results from people who have strictly undertaken this diet are amazing, it is a more restrictive version of the paleo diet, and is therefore quite difficult for people to adhere to (especially long term).
Was there a diet that could provide great results but was less restrictive?
After doing further research into the inflammatory effects of certain foods as well as our own trials and errors, we came up with our list of recommendations that we find to be both manageable and effective:
